My Deck

Warren, I'd like to do the maintenance on my deck myself this year.  What should I do?

  1. Your deck should be washed every year. Depending on what wood was used to create your deck will determine the type of maintenance and frequency. Pressure treated pine and mahogany are the most common of the deck materials used locally. Regardless of the wood species I encourage my clients to allow us to seal the deck surface each year. I am talking about the horizontal surfaces that take a beating from the elements. This is as simple as applying a water seal to the wood via a brush, roller or garden pump sprayer. You can easily do this yourself. Sand the deck lightly first. The rail systems and other vertical components can generally go longer with out treatment; but should be done at least each time your paint your home.
