Downspout Problems

Warren, water is pooling up at the base of my gutters and in heavy rains it spills over the tops of my gutters never making it to the actual downspouts. Help?

  1. This could be one of two things. If the water is spilling over the gutter, it could be either an undersized. More likely, there is debris in the gutter or at the entrance to the downspout. A simple gutter cleaning will do it. The pooling at the base of the downspout is generally a drainage issue. Sometimes a simple splash block or an extension of the downspout can direct the water away from the house. I have installed submerged drywells several feet away from the home and laid plastic or PVC piping from the base of the downspout into the well which allows the water to leech slowing into the ground. My favorite solution, if it doesn't create drainage issue right at the foundation, is to dig a 12"x18"x12" hole directly under the bottom of the downspout. Line the sides of the hole with flagstone or slate leaving the side away from the home without a liner and fill the hole with ¾" stone or some decorative landscaping stones. This will collect the water and allow it to weep slowly back into the ground. I leave the slate or flagstone raised high enough above grade to hold back my mulch. I did three of these last weekend.
